I'm working on a new habit every month. The goal is to build sustainable habits by focusing on one habit at a time for a whole month. If I can get myself to do something for 30 days, it will be much more likely to stick. My previous strategy (write down a bunch of great-sounding goals all at once, do them for a few days, forget about them) hasn't worked out so well.
For January, my habit is to meditate every day (before work, if it's a work day). I'm starting with 2 minutes a day and slowly increasing to 10 minutes by the end of the month. 2 minutes doesn't sound like much, but it's more important to build the habit than to meditate a lot. If my plan works and meditation becomes a long-term habit, I could keep slowly increasing and get to half an hour by the end of Month 3;
To further commit myself, I'm tracking my commitment on Beeminder.
